Why FluMiCo?

Retired teacher Anne talks about her involvement with FluMiCo.

„I have been working with FluMiCo since January 2016 and got in touch with the first refugees in the previous fall. The people that arrived here where totally exhausted and happy about a little smile, a friendly gesture and the help they were receiving. It was clear to me, that I would stay involved with them even after the provisory accommodations at Poznaner Straße where closed. So, I started to accompany refugees to civil administration appointments and helped them with daily tasks such as shopping. I experienced that without language skills it was nearly impossible to get along. Hence, I started to offer German classes to women in February and allowed them to bring their kids along. A few men also joined us. For some of the women, sharing a classroom with men was a totally new experience. Many of my students were able to skip the alphabetization class when they started the official courses. Friendships were formed as well. Me and my husband became like family to a young Syrian refugee. Being in touch with people from different countries, cultures and religions has enriched our lives tremendously.”
